The marine cook and steward work together in ensuring the crew’s health and well-being, with the steward usually holding a safety or medical training certificate. Marine engineers, on the other hand, ensure the soundness of mechanical and structural systems.

Careers on-shore are usually related to port operations, shipbuilding and repair and some are crossover positions. Port operations is a busy field involving port security, and cargo loading, unloading and distribution. Shipbuilding and repair careers handle construction and maintenance of vessels. Those with crossover positions work in the international shipping field with careers including human resources specialist, accountant, shipping and receiving clerk, and maritime lawyer.
