In 2015 alone, the sector contributed to the economy: over £40 billion in business turnover, 185,700 jobs and £14.5 billion in Gross Value Added (GVA). With UK Shipping Minister John Hayes vowing to push for further improvements in the UK’s ports. Careers in the maritime sector are expected to be more fruitful and fulfilling in the near future.

There are many job opportunities available in the shipping industry. In Felixstowe alone, we have several shipping jobs available. No matter your background, there are several jobs you can consider.

Career paths in shipping can generally be grouped into two, jobs at-sea or on-shore. At sea, you can see several countries in a month and your colleagues become your extended family. On-shore, you enjoy a multi-faceted career in a fast-paced environment.

A Thrilling Adventure on the Seas

If you choose life on the seas, job options fall under four general categories, general crew, steward, marine cook and marine engineer.

The crew takes care of cargo operations, ship maintenance, general servicing of deck equipment and the like. The marine cook and steward work together in ensuring the crew’s health and well-being, with the steward usually holding a safety or medical training certificate. Marine engineers, on the other hand, ensure the soundness of mechanical and structural systems.

A Fast-Paced Life on Shore

Careers on-shore are usually related to port operations, shipbuilding and repair and some are crossover positions. Port operations is a busy field involving port security, and cargo loading, unloading and distribution. Shipbuilding and repair careers handle construction and maintenance of vessels.  Those with crossover positions work in the international shipping field with careers including human resources specialist, accountant, shipping and receiving clerk, and maritime lawyer.

Maritime careers may be challenging but they offer promising returns. Whether you choose a career at sea or on-shore, you have many chances to grow your chosen career or explore other paths in the industry.
